The colourist magic of the harlequin recalls the Russian street acrobats. In terms of style and theme, the Zagreb gouache can be located in the so-called “second French period” (which started only after 1923) and can be linked with the Circus Vollard cycle. According to the label on the back, we believe that the gouache was bought in the thirties in the Flechtheim Gallery in Düsseldorf.
