An identical bust of T. D. is known to us from the Barlach bequest in Güstrow. In the prototype, the Zagreb specimen, it was perhaps first of all at the Barlach Exhibition at Paul Cassirer’s in Berlin, November 1917. The idea of portraying Tilla occurred to Barlach at the end of 1910. After a summer vacation in Nordwijk, he started modelling the portrait in the Cassirer flat in Berlin (a sequence of twelve studies on graph paper from a notebook, today in the Art Museum in Berne).
